Create WBS is the process of dividing the project work into smaller and manageable components, we call them work package. Work package is the lowest level of WBS whereby the cost, resource requirements and schedule can be well estimated and managed effectively. Moreover, it allows easy assignment of human resources and responsibility for activities.
Decomposition is a technique used to divide the the project work in form of project phases or project deliverable.
The inputs to use are:
- Project Scope statement – which explains the work to be performed and what is excluded from the project.
- Requirements Document – which explains all the needs to be produced by the project
- Enterprise Environmental factors – by checking if there is any specific WBS standard to use in relation to the project
- Organizational Process Assets – if there are any policies, procedures and templates for WBS as well as lessons learnt from the previous projects
The output of this process is called scope baseline whose components include
- Project Scope statement (with description, major deliverable, assumptions, constraints, etc)
- WBS (as hierarchical decomposition of the total scope of work to be carried out by the project team to achieve the objectives and produce the required product, service or result)
- WBS Dictionary (a document that provides detailed information on each component in the WBS)
