Planning is the second Process Group which consists of twenty four (24) processes. These processes help to develop the project management plan and project documents that will be used to carry out the project. They help to organize and prepare everything needed for the project before putting into actions. They help to know
- What is needed for the project
- How to perform the activities
- Who is going to do what activity
- Where to get the suppliers
- When the resources will be procured
- When the activity will be completed etc.
The twenty four (24) processes are grouped from ten knowledge areas of Scope (4 processes), Time (6 processes), Cost (3 processes), Quality (1 process), Communications (1 process), Human resources (1 process), Risks (5 processes), Procurement (1 process), Stakeholders (1 process) and Integration (1 process). It is a long procedure but worthy to do before execution starts. All these knowledge areas need to be planned in advance so that the objectives and deliverable of the project can be met.
So far, we have the project charter with the information such as scope, budget, timeline, stakeholders, risks, project team etc. They are going to be our starting points to formulate the project management plan.
Note that project management plan and project documents will be our outputs of this planning process group.
